GROOMING SUPPLIES
In order to keep your Boston Terrier looking good, you need to have the right tools. There is a large selection of grooming equipment available for every coat type, but there are some universal tools that every owner should have in order to perform general grooming duties.
The following is a list of grooming tools that every dog owner should have.
1. Slicker brush: This versatile brush can work on many different types of coat. The wire bristles grasp and remove a dog’s undercoat, help reduce shedding, and keep the coat from becoming matted.
2. Flea comb: A fine-toothed flea comb will be helpful in getting hard-to-reach spots and will remove any flea or flea dirt that may be in your dog’s coat.
3. Towels: Old towels are always handy and can be used to wipe off muddy paws and dry off wet coats.
4. Grooming glove: This tool (also called a hound glove) is wonderful for dogs with short coats because it helps loosen any dead hair and gets rid of surface dirt.
5. Nail clippers: Every dog needs to have his nails trimmed. A good pair of canine nail clippers will be very useful if you decide to tackle this task yourself.
6. Doggy toothbrush and toothpaste: Keeping your Boston Terrier’s teeth clean is essential for maintaining his good health. Be sure to purchase toothpaste and toothbrushes that are especially made for dogs. Never use human toothpaste when brushing your Boston Terrier’s teeth. Dogs will not spit out the toothpaste, like humans do, but will swallow it, which can cause stomach upset and digestive problems. Also, the minty taste that humans enjoy probably will not be as appealing to your Boston Terrier as it is to you. Canine toothpaste comes in “doggy-friendly” flavors, such as beef and poultry, and is edible.
7. Shampoo: There are many brands of canine shampoo available, as well as ones that have special purposes, such as flea shampoos, medicated shampoos, and whiteners. If you are unsure about what brand to buy, ask your veterinarian for a recommendation.
8. Conditioner: Dogs with long coats may need a conditioner to help remove tangles after bathing. As with shampoos, your vet can recommend a brand that is right for your dog.
9. Scissors: Blunt-nosed scissors are handy for trimming the excess fur on your dog’s feet, legs, tail, or anal region, as well as for trimming your dog’s whiskers.
