WHEN TO FEED YOUR BOSTON TERRIER

WHEN TO FEED YOUR BOSTON TERRIER

For Boston Terrier Puppies, start off with light, frequent meals because your puppy’s stomach is so small. If the breeder has included a feeding schedule with your diet sheet, follow that as closely as possible and make increases or decreases as recommended. If no feeding schedule accompanied your puppy, set one up right away.

A four-month-old (or younger) puppy should be fed four times a day. At four to six months of age, you can reduce the feedings to three, and after six months, you can start feeding once or twice a day, depending on your schedule. You should always feed him at the same time of day starting out with breakfast, lunch, mid-afternoon snack, and dinner, which should be served an hour before bedtime. Take your puppy, or even an adult Boston Terrier, outside to go potty as soon as he is finished with his meal.

Some people recommend “free feeding” your dog, which means leaving food out for him to nibble on all day. This makes it harder to judge exactly how much the dog has eaten and makes it harder to predict when the dog needs to go outside to eliminate. It also could lead to overeating, because many Boston Terriers will eat out of boredom. It is best to put the food down for your dog for a limited time and then take the food away when the time is up. Your Boston Terrier will adjust quickly to the schedule, and you’ll have more control over the amount consumed.

HOW MUCH TO FEED

If you don’t know the dog’s prior feeding schedule, you will have to figure out how much to feed him. Start off by following the directions on the dog food label and increasing or decreasing the amount as needed. Give the recommended amount for your Boston Terrier’s age and take it away after a period of time. If your dog eats the food quickly and leaves nothing, you need to increase the amount. If there is leftover food, you may have to decrease the amount or feed smaller meals more frequently. champagne boston terriers
