GROOMING - GETTING STARTED
Puppyhood is the best time to start grooming procedures, because your dog will more easily become used to the grooming routine and soon come to expect it as part of his everyday life. This is especially true if you have a dog that requires extensive grooming or if you plan to show your Boston Terrier. It is best to start out slowly so that he doesn’t become overwhelmed or frightened and then build on grooming time until you have the whole routine down pat.
If your Boston Terrier requires lots of grooming time, it is best to invest in a good grooming table. While he is getting beautiful, your dog’s leash can be attached to the grooming arm on the table, which will help keep him secure. Most tables also have nonskid pads on the surface to keep your dog from sliding around. A grooming table will save your back as well, because it can be adjusted to your height and make it unnecessary for you to bend over or kneel down.
Introduce your Boston Terrier to the grooming table slowly. Place him on it without doing anything to him and give him a treat when you let him down. After you do this a several times, your Boston Terrier should eagerly get up on the grooming table. You can then start lightly brushing him and running any appliances like hair dryers or clippers before actually doing anything major to his coat. When he seems totally comfortable, you can start grooming him on a regular basis. This gradual introduction will ensure that your Boston Terrier grows to enjoy his grooming time with you. Once your Boston Terrier is accustomed to being touched, patted, and fussed over, you can start a grooming routine that will keep him looking clean and healthy.
